Joe -

The D104 will work either WITH the amplifier or without it.

Set the mic amp control to minimum.  Set the GAIN control on the T-4XC 
to about 11 O'clock.  While talking in your normal voice at the normal 
distance from the mic, turn up the mic amp control until the Plate meter 
kicks up to about 150-200 mA on PEAKS.

If you have a scope on the transmitter, adjust the mic amp gain until 
the scope display starts to limit and then back off just a bit.

No mods required.
