Auke:
It's only to be expected that "in WPwin6.1 the manual kerning (Menu:
Layout, Typography) results in the same code as a horizontal advance
anyway." Even if a different code routine could be used, what would be
the point?
You "think you can fiddle with the letterspacing by setting them to
some percentage of optimal (etc.) in one of the menus. I haven't really
tested that because I don't have a good reason to do it (yet) -- even
though I am rather perfectionistic regarding layout and typography."
All my work is done with Postscript Type I fonts from Adobe Systems.
My initial codes are permanently set to "normal" for both word and
letter spacing. I've found that for my fonts the type designers' values
for the width of space bar spaces look much better than WP's "optimal"
one-third of the EM height. An undocumented feature, at least in WP 5.1
and 5.1+ for DOS, is that setting either or both word and letter spacing
to a percentage of "optimal" but setting "normal" instead of "optimal,"
results in that percentage of "normal."
