I read with great interest the article about a local Million Mom March
chapter forming in Pottstown [in both the West Chester Daily Local News and
the Pottstown Mercury]. The article quotes group advisor Cindy Murphy:
"the group is not against guns, it's against handgun violence and
illegal use of guns"
and founder Janine Legg: "anything that harms a child is an issue to me."

Funny thing, some 80 million law-abiding gun owners, myself included,
agree! Most of us are against all forms of violence. But "caring is
as caring
does," and good intentions do not always lead to good results.

Violence and crime is a social problem, not an equipment problem, and most
of the "sensible gun laws" being proposed do not address our
momumental social problems. Instead the Democrats cry "disarm the
unworthy classes!" and the Republicans holler "hang 'em
high!" It's like looking under the street light for the keys we lost
in the dark.

But politics aside, as a certified NRA firearms instructor, I offer my
talents to Ms Legg and her newly formed group to learn first-hand about the
subject matter. Hands-on, hands-off, whatever floats your boat.

Why? Because, as the proverbs go about "forbidden fruit" and
"curiosity killed the cat," we need to teach our children large
and small in realistic
terms about guns. Depending on their maturity level, a trip to the range
should be part of that training.

The National Rifle Association, despite fervent demonization by our mass
media, is the premiere firearms training organization in the world,
especially at the family level. Here is your chance to learn about what
training is available to all willing to learn.

Again, if you are a member of Ms Legg's group, feel free to contact me. No
politics, no preaching, I promise. My contact information is on file with
the editor.

[Editor: if this event materializes I'd be happy to entertain one or more
of your reporters as well.]

POTTSTOWN -- Keeping kids out of the way of violence caused by guns is a
cause dear to one Montgomery County Community College student's heart.

Janine Legg, a nursing student at the college's west campus, is the
president of the Million Mom March chapter serving Montgomery, Chester and
Delaware counties. The Million Mom March is a national, grassroots
organization founded in 1999 to prevent gun violence.

Legg, 47, is also the state representative for the organization, best known
for its anti-gun rally in Washington, D.C., on Mother's Day 2000.

Legg, who works as a home health aide and dreams of being a nurse for
hospice patients, recently started a chapter of the Million Mom March at
the Montgomery County Community College's west campus.

Fourteen women and one man signed up for the college's chapter, which
recently held its second meeting and elected officers.

"I was very glad to see how many people joined. All of the
participants are very interested in gun violence prevention," said
Legg, who noted members don't need to be mothers -- or even women -- to
join. "It's important to have Million Mom March groups on college
campuses, so it was important to me just to get the group started here at
Montgomery County Community College."

The group, which meets on campus monthly, will organize community events
and rallies as well as endorse political candidates. It will also uphold
the goals of Million Mom March, which are to enact and enforce sensible gun
laws, regulations and public policies, to elect pro-gun control public
officials and to increase public awareness of gun violence.

Legg, who will serve as the group's secretary and treasurer, will direct
students involved in the Montgomery County Community College Million Mom
March group "when they get stuck."

Currently the college chapter is working on setting up a violent toy trade
for sometime before Christmas, "where children of a certain age could
trade in their violent toys -- anything with guns or missiles -- and get a
non-violent toy, or maybe school supplies," said Cindy Murphy, group
advisor.

Murphy said it was no trouble at all getting students interested in Million
Mom March.

"The college is so community-oriented, this group is just another
aspect of that, really," she said. "We wanted to be very clear
that the group is not against guns, it's against handgun violence and
illegal use of guns. I think
the toy trade is a great idea that will help to show people what the group
is about."

Pottstown is an ideal location for a chapter of the national Million Mom
March, according to Legg, a former Pottstown resident.

"It's the most important place to have one, as far as I'm
concerned," Legg said. "It's kind of an urban setting in a remote
area -- an area where there have been incidents of gun violence."

A former child advocate, Legg got involved with Million Mom March because
"anything that harms a child is an issue to me. Gun violence
prevention is a public health issue," she said.
