My basic advice is "don't do it" unless you are sure you have
exhausted ebay
/ gemm.com / other online second hand stores as a source of replacement CDs
... since IMHO it is not worth the time.
I went through a similar album replacement exercise recently and had to
transfer the small number of albums I was unable to find on CD (at any
price, usually because they had never been issued on CD).
To do what I considered to be a decent transfer took about 3-5 hours per
album of careful editing and selectively applied noise reduction (I was
using CoolEdit and assorted CoolEdit plug-ins). It's fun the first album or
two, but then becomes extremely tiresome compared to just buying the CD. It
certainly destroyed any residual illusions I had about how much fun it
would be to be a studio recording engineer!
BTW if you do decide to do it :-) NAD also makes a small outboard phono
pre-amp, so you can get the RIAA equalization (as others have mentioned
here).
