Hello Thom,

As anyone would have done.. no one accepts files from "just
anyone" and for good reason.

> I guess you and they will have to sort of whatever problems exist.

No, you will have to take care of that.

File echos are not message echos, and are not handled like msg. echos for
good reason. The _same_ reason that you say the echolist is so important
(maintaining a verified list of owners of echos) is one (and only one) of
the reasons that file distribution is done the way it is. ONE person must
be the owner of the area, and upload the file to be distributed. ONE. It
keeps bogus files, virus infected files, trojan infected files and pirated
software from reaching all of our systems. That's one reason.

Another reason is covered under US law, that shareware is a distribution
method, and authors do not lose their rights to their products by allowing
them to be distributed. While your file isn't shareware, the majority of
the Filegate distribution is, and must be handled as outlined in the
filegate policy document (which you've probably never taken the time to
read).

You are thinking as one who was involved in file distribution 20 years ago,
before shareware was defined in the courts, and when file distribution was
such a mess that no one knew what the hell they'd have coming into their
system on a day-to-day basis. While we don't have the pain of telephone
bills destroying us these days as in those days, we DO have the potential
for bandwidth issues with duplicate files, bogus and virus-ridden copies
of a file being distributed. Your method doesn't work, and is one of the
reasons the FileGate was started by knowlegeable FDN coordinators.

> Luckily, anyone who really needs the file can get it via the Internet, which
> seems to be fairly dependable.

I can remove it from Filegate distribution. It will be off the list this
Sunday if you find the filegate's methods as outlined in FGPOL006.TXT too
restrictive for you. You can find that file here:

Take care,
Janis
