Yes, increasing the data density always make for lower
reliability, all other things being equal.

But the modern disks seem to be a lot more reliable than the old
ones. I find I am having less failures with modern 1.44meg 3.5"
disks than I was having 10 years ago with 360k 5.25k floppies.

Possibly it is mainly because of the improvements in the magnetic
medium.
