Watch the movie again (always a good idea anyway), when Luke and Vader 
started dueling is when the tide turned against the Empire's forces both on 
the ground and in space. The Emperor stopped paying attention to his forces, 
and the sudden lack of coordination caused the Imperials to do stupid things, 
like opening the hatch when Chewbacca knocked on it, or running into the 
Death Star.
