 Sadly too many people decide they want a pet and then don't realize
what it takes for upkeep and training of that pet. I have serious
discussions with one of my sons and he has a beautiful black lab
that though it does reside in the house is usually confined to one
of those large pet carriers.

 If you want a robot dog or dog of convenience you should buy a
robot dog.  Sorry just my personal opinion. :)

 However what is even worse is one of the local families around here
did have a beloved dog as a pet and some serious slimeball decided
to use it for shooting practice.  They've offered a substantial
reward for the arrest and conviction of whomever shot their dog and
I hope they nail the SOB!
