| subject: | the hardest part of training |
Dog trainers say the hardest part about training / altering a dog's behavior isn't always the dog, butt the owners. To many people think obedience school or a special trainer will be the magic bullet and presto chango the dog will behave. haaha. Nope. Guess what. We the owners have to carry on the training the way the trainer does. Whether it be with bribes (treats) and/or simply assertive calm. A funny here is this: Some guy writes into a pet advice forum complaining he spent 1k (!!!) to have his dog trained not to take food off the table. It didn't work. Now I'm going to hazard a guess here, not having seen any follow up. How much ya wanna bet the guy continued to feed the dog from the table thus UNDOING that 1K training? We are all guilty of feeding our pets from the table. Well if you don't want them begging or getting up there when you aren't there then you shouldn't do that. Makes sense doesn't it? We managed to undo the begging. Never give food from the table and never even give the dog eye contact while you eat. You're the pack leader, be one. Abbie likes to lay right under my chair though. hehe. After eating and you clear the table. If there's scraps like unseasoned meat or veggies. they can have a bit of that. But never from the table. Sometimes it works too: ban the dog from the eating area during meals. Cind ...
