DB> VH> Are they BETTER than my Kimber or my Argentine M1927? DB>I think it's great to hear someone rave about their Kimber, DB>_and_ their 27 Argentine. As you know, so many Kimber, and DB>other high end 1911 users, often tend to crap on older and DB>milspec guns. That 27 Argentine is pure Colt 1911 through DB>and through, and even the steel was hardened to Colt specs. DB>If you want to grab some gold medals, the sights might be DB>a little too basic, but your typical 27 is going to be DB>_just_ as reliable as any Thunder Ranch Special when you DB>need to pull the trigger. :) And than's exactly my experience. I really had no NEED to get a new gun, I just WANTED one. The old M1927 will shoot about as well as my Kimber for combat purposes, and is just as reliable. By the way, I've lusted for a Colt New Service for years. A few months ago, I found one at a gun show -- a pretty ratty specimen -- for $515. That's a lot lower than they're usually priced. But I walked away from it. About 3 weeks ago, I found one on Gunbroker.com, with no reserve price, and a starting bid of $395. I bid, thinking someone will surely out-bid me. As the time for the auction to close approached, I was sure someone would slip in at the last minute. Danged if I didn't get it!! For $395 plus $15 for shipping. I picked it up from my local FFL dealer day before yesterday, and it's gorgeous! Bore and chambers are shiny-bright, it locks up tight, with perfect timing. It probably hasn't had a hundred rounds through it since it was made in the early 1900s. I ran some handloads through it -- a .452 230 grain bullet behind 6.2 grains of Bullseye and got very nice accuracy out of it. I suspect when I get some .454 bullets it will shoot even better. What's the catch? It was recently re-blued!! That re-blue job (which was nicely done and makes the gun LOOK even better) reduced the collector's value about $500. Me, I don't care -- I want it for a shooter. It will make a great companion on long rides or hikes through the hills. --- Platinum Xpress/Win/WINServer v3.0pr5* Origin: Try Our Web Based QWK: DOCSPLACE.ORG (1:123/140) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 @PATH: 123/140 500 106/2000 633/267 |
