EC> If the Justice Department had NOT appealed the judicial

-> He was an illegal alien, he should not have been released. If the
-> justice dept had continued to fight it, and had the material that has
-> since been released, he would not have been.

Totally irrelevant to your belief that the Bush Justice Department
should NOT have appealed the judicial order for his release. Although
he had lived much of his adult life in the US, including Toledo, he was
not a citizen and could have been deported. And as you have learned
from this thread, he dropped all legal attempts to avoid deportation in
1989. But no country would accept him except for Cuba. The US had to
release him or send him to a terrorist nation with an abysmal human
rights record, a nation that the US ambassador to Venezuela said had
sent an assassination team to Venezuela to kill him in 1987, a nation
that wanted to try him for a crime he had already been acquitted of, a
nation that the US has NEVER extradited ANYONE to since Castro came to
power. Illegal aliens can be deported, and it happens all the time, but
keeping him here and keeping him locked up for the rest of his life just
for the crime of BEING here (especially after imprisoning him for the
parole violation, which amounted to locking him up for the crime of
LEAVING the US) is a deeply strange view of civil liberties.
