In a somewhat related topic, I saw this and responded to it last spring. It
shows the generally off-balanced attitude some "wouldbe-educators" have
regarding guns :

Subject: Guns for kids? Excerpt from Jewish Family & Life on net
Date: Sat, 08 Mar 1997 21:13:03 -0800
Some kids play with toy guns. Can I? Aliza's brown eyes often sparkle with

question. You know the look; you have kids. Sometimes Aliza wants to know
why
she can't have a cat and we tell her that her father is allergic. Yet
sometimes she wants to know the meaning of life, and we shrug our shoulders.
Every week, Aliza will seek to challenge the
"Jewish family.com" community with her innocent and tough questions. Let's
help her
parents out.

Dear Aliza, Don't play with guns! Toys or otherwise. They are only used for
killing and you don't want to be part of that. It's not Jewish to play with
guns.

Ususally boys play with guns. You can too, but most girls tend to want to
lay
with other things.

NEVER PALY WITH GUNS, TOY OR OTHERWISE... THE TEENAGE ISRAELI HAS TO KNOW OF
GUNS AND THAT IS SO SAD BUT NECESSARY.... I HOPE YOU KNOW IN YOUR LIFETIME A
WORLD OF PEACE WHERE GUNS ARE NEEDED NO MORE. LOVELOVELOVE XXOO THE ZAID

Aliza, Don't ever play with guns. They are meant for death and war, bad
things.

Aliza,
REAL guns are useful, necessary, and fun, and I have encouraged my children
o
learn about them, play with them, and use them as soon as they were old
enough
and responsible enough. But, I have never allowed any of my four children to
play with toy guns, because I believe it is too easy to confuse the careless
habits acquired with toy guns
with the extreme care required for the safe handling of real guns. Isaac

Sure you can play with toy guns, Aliza. When I was a boy, the games were
"Cowboys and Indians" and "Cops and Robbers"; today my children play
"Gargoyles versus Megazoids." Guns have a long and honorable history in self
defense and in the defense of nations and peoples, but when you graduate to
real guns you should learn about the enjoyment of hunting and sports
(including Olympic competition) such as trap, skeet, and the many types of
target shooting.

This is crazy!! I can't believe that most people do not object to Aliza
playing with guns. So many innocent children die from gun wounds every year.
Can this be Jewish? Our society is teaching our children to resolve their
differences with violence. This is not moral. Aliza, don't listen to these
people. They are not true Jews.

Children learn through play. What positive lesson could be learned using
toy(pretend) guns? Children need to know that guns are dangerous, and like
fire, are not to be played
with. There is so much to be found that creates positive play and helps
children develop life skills.

No Aliza. You may not play with guns. When you are grown up you may
choose differently. For now you are just a little girl. Sometimes children
have
played with guns thinking that they are toys. Sometimes those same children
have been hurt very badly and sometimes the friends or brothers and
sisters of those children are hurt very badly
or even accidentally killed. I love you very much and I don't want
to see my big girl get hurt. It is true that Mommy does not like guns -
ot
even water pistols -and that is because guns symbolize or mean violence. We
o
longer have to hunt for food. We may have to defend ourselves but as a child
that is not your job and because it is not your job, you do not have a need
o
handle guns. When you are adult and grown up like Mommy, you may choose
differently. Until then - no guns!

Why do American Jews, who represent a small minority in this country,
total such a large group of anti-gun leaders and contribute so much
toward disarming the citizen populace? This seems in contradiction to
their collective experiences! I admire the efforts of Jews in Isreal for
being armed and ready to defend their freedom, but am puzzled by local
Jews.
I saw sign meant for sale (in jest) in a shop ... it read:
THIS FAMILY SUPPORTS GUN CONTROL! THE PEOPLE IN THIS HOME ARE TOTALLY LAW
ABIDING AND UNARMED!
Let Aliza be trained in safe gun handling early, she can decide for
herself later if she needs a gun. ld How many of you would
like to have such a sign displayed near your front door?
