subject: Rounded up...

Err .. got this from pmunro{at}netsolcq.com (Pete Munro), and thought
it might amuse...

A farmer is wondering how many sheep he has in his field, so he
asks his sheepdog to count them. The dog runs into the field,
counts them, and then runs back to his master.

"So," says the farmer. "How many sheep were there?"
"40," replies the dog.
"How can there be 40?" exclaims the farmer. "I only bought 38!"

"I know," says the dog. "But I rounded them up."

In NZ we have a 12.5% GST (`general sales tax' or `grab, snatch
and thieve', whichever) on everything and the law requires you to
always advertise inclusive prices; doesn't stop retailers trying
other approaches, providing the true inclusive price is shown
somewhere - no matter how small the typeface.

The change in coinage in another thing - there is now no coin for
any value under 10 cents - just for 10, 20 and 50 cents - so
making the wretched "psychological pricing" strategm of $9.99 or
$99.99 irrelevant.

However, such is the usage of credit and EFTPOS cards in NZ that
retailers revel unchecked in all manner of such nonsenses,
regardless - including rounding up policies such as totals
ending in 1,2,3 and 4 cents rounding down to the lower 10 cents
while 5,6,7,8 and 9 rounds up to the higher 10....

Such fairness....

Miles.
