That's what I meant... to me the "output" of an automotive voltage
regulator is the field supply.
field supply here peaks at about 500ma. maybe they use an inductor based
step-up? (seems like a good bet since engine compartments are the sort of
a tough environment that kills electrolytic capacitors,
hmmm, also the polarity of the field isn't important...
maybe something like this.
