subject: Treadmill use

Those of you familiar with Cesar Milan will know he does NOT as his
critics say "force the dog to go on the treadmill"... Where do they
get this baloney from?

Anyway if you read how he and other trainers train a dog to use the
treadmill you'll see there is no force involved.

I think they're great as a supplement for natural out of doors walking
but should not be a replacement. They shouldn't be used by people who
have a big dog but too lazy or to 'busy' *(then why have a dog) to
cater to the dogs needs. The dogs are all too willing to fill our
needs, what about theirs?

Anyway when we lived in Texas not too long ago and our terrier/shih
tzu Abbie was still a pup and a bit hyper at times (if she didn't get
her long walk every day)- I thought I'd try out the treadmill my hubby
and I used to walk/run when the weather was too hot or too cold.
(Y'all who know, know Texas )

Anyway I did exactly what the training site and CM said to do. Lots of
patience and consistent and never right after the dog eats (for
obvious reasons :) )... I got to the point where she'd happily go SIT
on the thing (without it moving) and I also got her to walk on it a
little bit at a slow speed... (they get confused by the floor moving
as it were.)

But two things happened. One I realized she would sit up on the mill's
belt not because she wanted to walk but because she wanted what I used
to get her to go on t it: A treat! ha! :)

The other thing is the weather got better and we started out daily
outside walks again; plus I was doing dogsitting. She got tons of
exercise and play. The mill wasn't needed.

OH third thing, pre to our moving back to Florida, we sold it. The
mill. Abbie gets her walks, I do to. Hubby runs every other day...

Mills are okay but no replacement for the real thing. JMHO :)
