I've only seen kids do this in the mob mentality of the schoolground or
daycare where "pecking order" comes into play. Do kids with a higher
ratio of supervising parents (like homeschooled kids playing together)
do this as often. Seems like in that situation, a supervising parent
would step in and correct the behavior and teach consideration.
I remember how in every school I attended, one child would be singled
out for extraordinarily cruel treatment. One such child in
elementary school was Della (last name withheld). She was ostracized
for having "cooties". No one would play with her or anything else.
Although I did not taunt her, I also did not defend her. I met her a
couple of years ago. She turned out very strange, never married, two
children, and stated she was an "artist". I was sad and wished I had
been taught to stand up for her when we were little (which I would have
been if we were supervised more).
