Hi Susan,
Apparently one of the major causes of so called common illness' becoming
drug resistant is the indiscriminate use of antibiotics. Doctors prescribe
them for every little sniffle, people take the drug until they start to feel
better and then stop taking it. The drug kills the weak germs and the most
drug-resistant bugs are still alive and get passed on to reproduce even
more resistant ones. The people recover because the body's own immune system
finally kicks in and does it's job.
That's as I've heard it anyway.
Back on topic (what a wonderful idea!) I just finished John Straley's 'The
Curious Eat Themselves'. This is the middle of the 3 Alaskan mysteries that
he has written, and my favorite.  His narrative is very evocative and full
of telling detail about life in Alaska. In this one he visits Prudhoe Bay in
search of a suspect (and also trying to link up with his ex). His little
points about the odor of diesel, and about life in the camps is right on the
button.  His character are real, believable people and his plots flow to
satisfying conclusions.
If you can't tell, I really like Straley's books!
I just started  Laurie King's 'With Child' and it also looks to be a winner.
