I don't remember who it was that was asking recently about how to avoid
GeoFile crashes and refusals to open the datafile the next time, but I
forgot to make one important comment on the subject of doing a
save and exiting cleanly as a way to avoid lockups when I wrote my
lengthy reply a couple of weeks ago.
I think the way I do my save and exit is what keeps me from having
these lockups and problems getting back into the Geofile database.
To put it succinctly, I never ask GEOS to do a large save at the same
time I am asking to exit. When I know I am ready to leave, I do a
save. Then I move forward to the next record or backward to the
previous record. Then I click on "close" and, when the menu asks
if I want to save or discard, I tell it to "save" and GEOS saves
the information that I moved my cursor one record forward or backward
and exits me out to the desktop. I *never* choose "exit" instead of
"close" and I *never* close with an instruction to "save" after having
done a lot of revision or new entry work on the data records. I
*always* do the big save first and then do something simple like
moving to another record and close with the little save. That might
be why I have not had lockup problems or ever corrupted my database
where it won't reopen later. This "trick" isn't to my knowledge in
any manuals or help menus; I have used it from the day I started
using GeoFile based upon some problems I had exiting from my
PerfectFiler on my old CPM computer and the advice I was given over
the telephone by one of the members of the long defunct Kaypro
Users Group in my city.
