Right, all the nets in fido today are unique, there are no duplicated nets
anymore so the zones are truly irrelevant.

That only works if the post in question was posted by the sysop. A user on
a BBS could be away in the distance.

I often look at the origin line of messages to see where it originates.
That was more accurate in the dial-up days, BBS users were usually a local
call to the BBS. That may or may not be the case today.

I was there a year or two ago looking at my nodes history.

I had forgotten all the moving around I did in Vancouver. Life is much
better out here in the country.. :)
