Yep.  I think I got it with the right switches to cat and echo.  Seeing
that much of the pkt header is static quite a bit of the header can be a
set of static files and then just redirect the cat (<-static fields),
echo (<-dynamic fields), calls to a formatted date (<- for the
time/date field), and redirect all this to a resulting pkt.  I know this
occured to me at one time but I obviously wasn't looking at this the right
way on those prior attempts.  Now I just need a better way to filter
incoming pkt's and I think I can safely say, "I don't need no stinkin'
Perl!"  :-)
