Those second jacks are the RJ-45 'Twisted Pair'. You are correct, they are
VERY similar to "phone jacks" (which are normally RJ-11's). The biggest
difference being that they have 8 pins instead of the 4 that the usual telco
phone jacks have.
If you wanted, you could use those connectors with the 'cross-pinned' twisted
pair cable I mentioned previously, and you wouldn't have to mess with the
terminators, but since that method requires less hardware (just the wire and
the crimped on RJ-45 modular plugs) you'ld have some stuff left over since
you've already gotten the "T"s and the Coax cable made.
It's good that you have those "combo" cards (10Base-2/T) as it will probably
be a bit LE$$ when you get ready to add a couple more nodes and a hub. I
think the TP hubs are a bit less than the RJ-45 ones.
My hub arrived -TODAY- and so far it seems to work GREAT!!
The SMC cards haven't been tested yet, but the 3COMs are solid!
I was pleasantly surprized to see that it was a STP (Shielded TP) hub and the
cables I ordered from 'MicroWarehouse' were STP as well.
I now have the 386/33 communicating with the 286/12, and users on my BBS can
'open a door' and telnet over to the NOS software running on the 286, where
my HamRadio Packet TNCs are hooked in :)
I still need to learn a bit more about 'netmask' and 'broadcast' values, but
I'm on my way to getting the HomeLAN operational. After I get the main
486dx4 built, the Old CORONA XT (for HF Radio Packet), the laptop dock, and
perhaps the computer that controls the house hooked in - I'll be a happy
camper (for a while..;). I guess then I'll start thinking about the $$$ to
uplink to an ISDN router. ;>
I hope you can find a good deal on those term's and that
solves the problem. Please keep us informed.
All the Best,
