Re: Weather By: Roger Nelson to All on Sat May 30 2015 10:46:04 RN> MAGNETIC FILAMENTS ON THE SUN: With no sunspots actively flaring this RN> weekend, solar activity is low. Or is it? There's more to solar activity RN> than sunspots and flares. "I can't recall ever seeing as many magnetic RN> filaments on the sun as I have this month," points out amateur astronomer RN> John W. O'Neal of Amherst, Ohio. "This composite image is my tribute to RN> the filament-ridden sun of May 2015." I've got to say, I haven't been watching the sun for that long; basically just since the start of the maxima this time around, but the amount of filaments on there is breathtaking lately. I guess I don't know from experience that it's a huge amount compared to normal for this part of settling into the minima, but the very fact that some of these filaments are large enough so that, if they launched in the right vector, they could set us back to the stone age really blows my mind a bit. -D --- SBBSecho 2.27-OpenBSD* Origin: Tinfoil.synchro.net - now at FTN (1:340/200) (1:340/200) SEEN-BY: 19/33 34/999 90/1 116/18 120/331 123/500 128/187 135/364 140/1 SEEN-BY: 218/700 222/2 226/0 160 230/150 240/1120 249/303 261/38 100 266/404 SEEN-BY: 267/155 280/464 1027 282/1031 1056 292/907 908 320/119 340/400 393/68 SEEN-BY: 396/45 633/267 640/384 712/620 848 770/1 801/161 @PATH: 340/200 400 261/38 712/848 633/267 |
