I was born and spent my first few years in a suburb of Liverpool. 
Since it was a major port for the convoys from North America, it 
received plenty of attention from German bombers. Hundreds of barrage 
balloons were flown whenever the weather permitted. 
  
Most of the balloons were tethered to winches set up on bomb-sites. A 
result of the bombing was used as a defence against it.
