A) Have you got an environment variable pointing to where maximus is?
B) when you run your batchfile that logs people on, are you switching to the 
right directory when you load?
C) You mentioned changing over from max 2.0. In that case you _DID_ follow 
the destructions and convert the user-file to the new format, didn't you? :)
