subject: long-range lightning

My sister, who lives in England, told me about something that allegedly
happened recently to a British kid who was on vacation on a Caribbean
island. Apparently, he was playing on the beach, in fine, sunny
weather. Without warning, he was struck by lightning and killed.
Allegedly, the lightning came from a storm "hundreds of miles away" (my
sister's words), and travelled more or less horizontally for that
distance.

My sister does have a credulous streak in her. Sometimes, she comes up
with really bizarre ideas. But she says this event was reported in the
British media. If so, it can't just be a figment of her imagination.

Has anyone here heard of this event, or of something that might get
misrepresented this way? And does anyone have any knowledge of this
kind of long-range lightning?
