Fer some reason your reply to me never made it here.

The implants are a built-in ID tag.  If the dog gets lost and manages
to get rid of its collar (or if the tag comes off of the collar) it can still
be identified with a chip reader.  Most vets now have them, and I presume
the 'humane' societies do too.
