 BL> Hi Ron,
BL> I'm kinda new to it myself, but have been lurking here for several
BL> months now, and been spending a LOT of time in the catalogs ;). The
BL> way I understand it (presuming these are BNC connecters you're
BL> dealing with), you'll need a "T" connector for the back of each of
BL> the TWO (and MAXIMUM of TWO) cards, and two 50-52 Ohm Male BNC
BL> terminators for each of the "T" connectors. The "T"s are actually
BL> two females and one male BNC. The Male BNC connects to the female
BL> on the cards backplane, the terminators connect to one of the female
BL> BNC's on each "T", and the cable (which SHOULD have a male BNC on
BL> each end) connects between the remaining female BNC conns at each
 BL> computer.
 BL> Mouser Electronics (800-346-6873) has:
 BL> "T"s (Amphenol Brand) - $3.68 ea (523-31-208-RFX) [MilSpec]
 BL> 50 ohm terminators - $2.80 ea (523-46650-51-RFX) [MilSpec]
 BL> JameCo Electronics (800-831-4242) has:
 BL> "T"s (generic brand) - $2.49 ea (PN 118594) (Prod code BNC200)
 BL> 50 ohm terminators - $1.75 ea (PN 71458)
BL> DigiKey (800-344-4539) is another one that has Amp' at a comparable
BL> price to Mouser, and Dalco (800-445-5342) has them too, but for abt
BL> same as JameCo (probably NOT Amp' brand parts :(
BL> (note: I didn't see the terminators in the DigiKey catalog,
BL> but it's getting late and my eyes are half closed |>
BL> I'm sure they would have them...)
BL> I originally wanted to go the ThinNet Ether as well, but when the cards
BL> came - they were RJ-45 (TwistedPair), which has worked out OK, because
BL> I got a REALLY good deal on them (2 - 3COM cards that sell for $40 ea
 BL> from my suppliers - I got for $5 ea AND 5 - SMC 8013WC cards (a bit
BL> older ones with AUI/RJ-45 conns) I got for $15 for all five). I've
BL> been really blessed in finding the drivers for all the cards on the
 BL> internet b4 I lost my ISP.
BL> I've ordered a LanTech 5-port hub for $35 and a couple STP cables, and
BL> we'll see how that works out. I could have gone with just a
BL> cross-pinned cable for about $25 and ran just the two cards direct, but
BL> I have 2 desktops, 2 towers, and a laptop that I hope to LAN soon, so I
BL> figured I'd give an inexpensive hub a try.
Very informative, indeed...thanks a lot, I'll try this items in our local
computer stores here. I just hope I'll find one. I have a feeling that this
(terminator) is really what I need. This is my first time to try out this
cards, so I'm kind of lost...(I should have bought the starter kit instead)
BTW, both cards came with a "T" connector so I think I'll just have to find
the terminators and add it to the set.
And also the card has two types of sockets at the back, one looks like for
he
coax (BNC) and there is another socket which is the same as the sockets you
find at the back of modems ( where you connect the phone line ).
Sorry I dont know the terminologies here.
Thanks again.
