Hi Ron,
I'm kinda new to it myself, but have been lurking here for several months
now, and been spending a LOT of time in the catalogs ;). The way I
understand it (presuming these are BNC connecters you're dealing with),
you'll need a "T" connector for the back of each of the TWO (and MAXIMUM of
TWO) cards, and two 50-52 Ohm Male BNC terminators for each of the "T"
connectors. The "T"s are actually two females and one male BNC. The Male
BNC connects to the female on the cards backplane, the terminators connect to
one of the female BNC's on each "T", and the cable (which SHOULD have a male
BNC on each end) connects between the remaining female BNC conns at each
computer.
Mouser Electronics (800-346-6873) has:
"T"s (Amphenol Brand) - $3.68 ea (523-31-208-RFX) [MilSpec]
50 ohm terminators - $2.80 ea (523-46650-51-RFX) [MilSpec]
JameCo Electronics (800-831-4242) has:
"T"s (generic brand) - $2.49 ea (PN 118594) (Prod code BNC200)
50 ohm terminators - $1.75 ea (PN 71458)
DigiKey (800-344-4539) is another one that has Amp' at a comparable price to
Mouser, and Dalco (800-445-5342) has them too, but for abt same as JameCo
(probably NOT Amp' brand parts :(
(note: I didn't see the terminators in the DigiKey catalog,
but it's getting late and my eyes are half closed |>
I'm sure they would have them...)
I originally wanted to go the ThinNet Ether as well, but when the cards came
- they were RJ-45 (TwistedPair), which has worked out OK, because I got a
REALLY good deal on them (2 - 3COM cards that sell for $40 ea from my
suppliers - I got for $5 ea AND 5 - SMC 8013WC cards (a bit older ones with
AUI/RJ-45 conns) I got for $15 for all five). I've been really blessed in
finding the drivers for all the cards on the internet b4 I lost my ISP.
I've ordered a LanTech 5-port hub for $35 and a couple STP cables, and we'll
see how that works out. I could have gone with just a cross-pinned cable for
about $25 and ran just the two cards direct, but I have 2 desktops, 2 towers,
and a laptop that I hope to LAN soon, so I figured I'd give an inexpensive
hub a try.
Happy Days,
