We have a quasi national sales tax on selected items - gas, tires, airline
tickets, ammo, etc.  The govt prefers to call'em excise taxes and other
less inflammatory terms, but they're defacto sales taxes.

The tire tax is a real irritant - as I recall it was enacted during WWII
and was supposed to go away when it ended...yea right.
