I once wrote an article on how to avoid getting sued for plagiarism as a writer. My suggestion was to keep a "reading journal" that lists the title author, and publication date of everything you read. Keep it consistently. Then, if anyone whines, you can go to your journal and say, with some confidence, "No, I didn't even read X by Y. Sorry."
