I like the echoes better because, as you say, they are friendlier.
I've only looked at the newsgroups a couple of times on the internet.
I have participated on them on Freenet but they are easier to follow
there.  If I find something to interest me, I'm sure I'll figure it
out in no time, but I do find enough ways to use up time on the 
internet as it is  :)
However, if you see anything that you think might be of interest to
me, newsgroups or websites, just let me know.  I love to explore :)
