The earthquake was down near San Jose, which is a ways south of us
(about an hour and a half's drive, if I recall). I didn't feel it at
all, but Richard (whose lab is on the fourth floor of the building) did. Not
very big; I missed the news that night but there must not have been any
damage because there have been no follow-up stories. I'll keep an eye out in
the weekly earthquake summary and see how big it was. (Yes, there is a
weekly map in our local newspaper showing seismic activity, which ought to
give you an idea of just how many earthquakes we have in the area.)
You may also have heard that the Seattle Mariners had to cancel a baseball
game a few weeks back because of an earthquake (a four-point- something, just
a baby quake). Turns out that one of the radio broadcasters working that
night is a fellow who was doing the radio broadcasts with the San Francisco
Giants and he was on-air during the Loma Prieta earthquake (our big shaker in
'89). He thinks he may be the only broadcaster in history who has been
on-air at the scene of *two* games cancelled because of earthquakes.
