I don't know how it is up north but there are a lot of pets being
abandoned by families faced with Foreclosures. The SPCA in Georgia has
a huge Forelocks fund going to help rescue shelters handle the
tremendous surge of abandoned pets families can not afford to keep.

Petfinder.com is an ideal source for pet adoption. The site gives you
options of locale, breed/mix, age/gender and once you pick those
options a list of rescue shelters in that area with a listing of dogs
waiting for adoption.

Many of the shelters in the area the article I read about is in, have
had to put hundreds of perfectly healthy dogs 'to sleep' just to make
space. One worker was quoted as saying, "You pick up a healthy young
adult dog and his only crime is being alive."
