--- Sez Stuart Dubois to Mike Taylor ---
SD> Dust _Hard Attack_
MT> Not familiar with these guys.
SD> They're another group that are more prog because of being cutting edge
SD> early 70's "stoner" hard rock than for actually sounding like any real
SD> prog band. Like that Culpeper's Orchard thing, which puts the Eagles
SD> entire career to shame. They have 2 albums, s/t and _Hard Attack_.
SD> The first is spottier, but contains the must-have anthem "From a Dry
SD> Camel", which rivals "Dazed and Confused" in sheer intensity. _Hard
SD> Attack_ is a lost classic, perfect stoner hard rock from beginning to
SD> end (kind of like a Best of Deep Purple might sound).
I listened to this last night, probably not loud enough, cuz it really
didn't overly impress me. Apart from the cover painting (Frank Frazetta:
Viking barbarians fighting in the snow) I don't see any Prog at all.
Not to say it's bad, and I suppose it's a little more "advanced" than
Bull Angus or Sir Lord Baltimore, and I know you didn't say it WAS
Prog... I don't really hear much Deep Purple in their sound though,
probably because of the lack of any keyboards... For me, _Deepest
Purple_ was worth the 5 bucks just for "Child In Time"...
No band photo on the jacket, so I can't tell if they were into leather
or satin, but genealogically, I'd say they're more anti-Prog than Prog
since the drummer Marc Bell later became Marky Ramone, and worked with
Richard Hell as well, if I remember correctly. Given the year (1972)
I perfectly understand the stretching of boundaries a bit. After all,
I'm not enough of a trained musician to catch odd time signatures and
key changes and such unless I'm really concentrating. No big long
pretentious suites here either, though there were some strings tacked
on at least one song...
I should probably stick it on a cassette against future opportunities
to evaluate "stoner hard rock"... ;-)

NP: _The Soft Machine Volume Two_
... I hate to advocate drugs or alcohol but they've always worked for me!
