Actually you have been taken in by one of the oldest rumors that have
been going around since Scuba diving became a sport, and industry.

What was found out a long time ago was that certain electronic equipment
that was used underwater would emit a certain high pitched carrier wave
that would drive sharks away, (along with all the other sea creatures)
Unfortunately the carrier wave will also drive the diver out of the water.
The piece of equipment used is called a sonar transdusor used for doing
seizmic surveys to locate gas, oil, and mineral deposits in the ocean floor.
It requires a 120 ship to haul it around. Sorry but it's not man portable.
