I don't know how long-range, but a few years ago, a young lady was killed
in this area by lightning, and there was not a thunderstorm in the vicinity.
IIRC, it was still sunny in her area.

Oftentimes, I think that this type of thing can happen when weather is at
least approaching an area, but has not gotten close enough yet to be
detected otherwise (unless you're watching the radar on TV).  If the static
charges are starting to build, and are right.

Also, there is a such thing as horizontal lightning.  Cloud-to-cloud
lightning, for example, moves horizontally, rather than vertically.
