| subject: | calling a lose dog |
Last week a neighbor's boxer got out the door and ran around our part complex court. Some kids were chasing the dog trying to catch him. My hubby and I were out walking our two and this attracted the dog whose body language told us he is friendly. But he dashed off again. His owner was angry /upset .. You could see that. I gave Abbie's leash to hubby and standing my ground told everybody to stop chasing. His owner stood next to me. A young gal and she was obviously not very happy with her dog. I called the dog, put my hand out palm down. He stopped to play date with my two but I said no and said come.. here... and he did tail wagging. I let him sniff my hand, slipped my nand to his collar and let his owner take over. I hope she wasn't too embarrassed. I would have been and have been when I couldn't get Abbie to come once when she slipped out of her harness and went running up the road... Never chase the dog. That's what alphas want you to do. And they make a game out of it. I got my how to for this and more from "Leader of a the Pack: how to take control of your relationships with your dog".. by Nancy Baer and Steve Duno Excellent book. It's a bit old and dog eared but still helpful! (I got it from a friend). They say a lot of the same thing a few other dog trainers /experts say. Does make sense! And they also emphasis the difference between being a leader and being a 'boss'. WHen I called our neighbor's dog to me I projected calm assertiveness. No anger, no threat, no fear either. Most dogs respond readily in a good way to calm assertiveness.
