  In order to save a little bandwidth, I didn't post you a separate
copy of my next attempt; I figured you'ld see what I wrote to Doug
Wilson.
  I used what you told me about setting up the track strings; seems to
work real well.
  It ginks where I want it to start my dld; may be using my counters
wrong.
  Thanks again for your time and trouble.  You may have learned an old
dog a new trick.
