subject: Avast: Unable To Remove?

I got caught in some sort of Avast update failure and now I seem to be
stuck. Current version 32767.65535

Windows XP (yes, it's out of date...but this is a special-purpose
machine).

Avast does not appear in "Add-Remove Programs", yet some part of it is
running as witnessed by the System Tray icon. But when I open up the
UI by clicking the System Tray icon and try to do an "Update", it throws
a dialog: "Failed to update. The avast! service is not running."

Kind of makes sense because when I open up MyComputer | Manage |
Services and Applications | Services, there is no entry for Avast.

What I'm thinking is that I need to get rid of everything Avast and
start over with a clean install.

But when I try to delete C:\Program Files\AVAST Software, various .dll's
are in use.

What to do?
