I try not to throw much of anything away if I can help it,  if it's
anything that might be useful in some context at some time.

The sidedness isn't an issue,  SS drives had one head and a felt pad,  DS
drives had two heads and one of them was in a slightly different mounting. 
That's not a problem in most cases as the head select line is not used with
the SS drives and the unused state (?) seems to get you the right side.

Not sure what you're referring to here particularly the first part.

Formatting could be a problem,  though,  if you're trying to put a HD drive
in where a DD was before.  The number of tracks is wrong,  and if you
double-step it then you still have a narrower track which could be a bit of
a problem if there were data on the floppy written by the older drives.
