The magazine had a strict word limit of 3k words.  I thought I had cut
most of the guts out of the story, but that didn't matter to the editor.
Also, this is the same magazine that "edited" one of my stories by
cutting the last sentence of every other paragraph.  I can only assume
they needed the extra space for diaper ads or something.

My understanding is that right now, the person who does the art for the
book cover gets more money than the author.  ($6k vs. $2-$3k for the first
novel)  I don't get it, but apparently it makes sense to someone....
