Paul,
PH> DS> Technicially, it's El Nino (male) or La Nina (female), per Spanish
PH> DS> grammatical rules. The El Nino is for the warming of the Pacific waters
PH> DS> while La Nina is the opposite.
PH> DS>
PH> DS> Either way, it's a meteorological mess.
PH>Aha... thanks for the info and yes, it's a mess alright!
I had 4 years of Spanish in high school in south Florida...and unless you
speak Spanish, you won't get around very well. I can read it, but I can't speak
it.
Weatherwise, for my part of the U.S. (the lower Mississippi Valley, the
Arklatex, and the Arklamiss) are forecast to have MUCH ABOVE NORMAL
precipitation and temperatures for the next 2 to 4 weeks. This time of year,
that could mean a setup for severe thunderstorms with large hail, damaging
wind, flooding rain, and tornadoes. Some models are showing one such event the
first part of next week (21st through the 23rd), and possibly a more
significant severe weather event just after Christmas.
In the past, Arkansas has had winter tornadoes in:
1) December (1982 (on the 2nd and Christmas Eve))
2) January (1999...56 tornadoes in 6 hours). One was only a half mile from
downtown Little Rock, and another tornado hit a high school in Beebe, about 50
miles to the northeast. They had been playing a basketball game there, and were
monitoring the ham radio Skywarn Operations net on storms coming up from the
southwest. They STOPPED the game at halftime, and evacuated the premises. 30
minutes later, the tornado flattened the school and the gym.
3) February (2008)...an EF-4 tornado was on the ground for a record 125 miles
across west central into north central Arkansas.
4) March (1997)...an F-4 tornado hit Arkadelphia, then came up just south of
Interstate 30, then hit the College Station area, just to the south of Little
Rock National Airport.
And, unfortunately, most of Arkansas' severe weather occurs after dark...when
people are asleep, or not expecting severe weather.
