Greeting David,
I forgot before, a couple of other things that I noticed at
SoftDev. IBM was there (no Lotus this time) with the 2nd largest booth
of the show (after Sun). It was pretty boring, except they were showing
their Upcoming VisualAge for Java compiler. So now almost every major
tool vendor will have a Java toy for you to choose among.
I also noticed that there was no sign of Fortran PowerStation at
all in the Microsoft pavilion. I just did some checking and I think I
have some great news for you all. Microsoft has agreed to grant my wish
for next Xmas - Early! - They are selling the Fortran product line. As of
March 31, 1997 DEC has taken over all Sales & Marketing Worldwide and on
October 31, 1997, they will assume responsibility for Development,
Support, and all other matters!
You mention the DevStudio, I took a bit of a peek @ it and found
a pleasant surprise. The preliminary information Ms. gave out indicated
it would be composed of 5 or 6 pieces, including Visual SourceSafe. Well
it turns out there are only 4 components, including VFoxP and no SSafe. I
think this may be a real break for FP lovers, the fewer pieces has meant
a lower, more affordable price. Over the next 6 months or so, I bet there
will be a lot of Visual C++ & VBasic users who upgrade to DevS97 and get
to experience FP in the bargain!
Before I forget to tell you again, I got a cool Java tip fer ya.
Quick, pick-up a copy of the April, 1997 Java Report ($5), it comes
with a keen, Large fold-out chart of the new Java 1.1 API Class Hierarchy
Diagrams, that SunSoft just published. It includes much more robust
Security provisions, fixing 1 of the 2 main complaints about Java 1.0 .
Mocha-Java is best,
den
