Fair point.  From what I've read on the subject, it's harder to do an
upgrade between major versions (e.g. 8.0 to 9.1) but easy to do them from
minors (e.g. 9.1 to 9.1).  If you're gonna nuke the system anyway, just
give it a go - you haven't got anything to loose (obviously, do a backup of
important data first).

If you want, you could fix the x-windows stuff first by running
"xf86config" from the bash prompt.  This will take you through
recreating a new config file for X which should solve the problems.

Also, even if you decide to format your system ("/") partition
(if it's partitioned seperately?), you could just leave your
"/home" partition intact. This would mean you'd keep most of your
settings for programs which would mean less work configuring a new install.
