a new digital control system for BBC relay stations and
rebroadcasters. (Simon Spanswick) The BBC radio Astra relays continue.
WEATHER--The owner of the Weather Channel, Landmark, has acquired 50
percent of Pelmorex, which owns the rival Weather Network. The deal
will lead to the Weather Channel becoming Britain's sole TV weather
channel from this Spring onwards, as the Weather Network will be
closing. ("What Satellite TV")

If you've wondered about the strange screen seen on Eutelsat II-F4 (7
degrees East) on 11.428 GHz, this is from a BASYS news computer
system. This satellite is used by the EBU for sound in sync relays.
The BASYS screen was replaced by an "EBU Moscow" screen Monday
afternoon. It would be interesting to know who is putting their BASYS
system on satellite.

Murdoch on October 20, confiscating files and computer data to gather
evidence in a USD 150 million tax evasion case. Israeli Radio says 70
tax agents raided a factory in Haifa and offices in Jerusalem. The
radio says the Murdoch company News Datacom Research Ltd (NDR)
developed sophisticated technology what was created locally and
smuggled abroad without reporting the transactions to the tax
authorities. NDR has issued a statement rejected the charges as being
"without merit". A spokeswoman for the Income Tax Authority has denied
reports the authority has petitioned the Jerusalem District Court to
detain Murdoch if he were to enter Israel. (AP and Reuters)

MURDOCH--An English-language satellite channel from Rupert Murdoch's
Star Television will air Hindi programs to India at prime time,
company executives announced on October 17. A key part of Star Plus's
new line- up will be prime-time news bulletins in Hindi and English
focused on India. Gene Swinstead, Star TV's managing director for
India, says the Indianization of Star Plus is part of a strategy by
the channel across Asia to offer more local programming. (Reuters)
Rupert Murdoch's New Zealand news group, Independent Newspapers, said
October 18 it was in talks to buy a substantial shareholding in the
country's largest pay-TV operator, Sky Network TV. Analysts say

CANADA--Responding to a dispute with the United States, Canada said on
October 29 that it plans to develop its own satellite-TV industry
rather than rely on US companies such as TCI to jump-start the
business. The announcement came just hours after the Federal
Communications rejected for a second time a bid by TCI and TelQuest
Ventures to beam TV programs to the United States from two satellites
in Canadian-authoritized orbits. The Canadian satellites would also
have beamed shows to Canadian households via pizza-sized dishes.
Canada's Minister of Industry John Manley plans to invite Canadian
companies to bid for the ownership and operation of two Canadian
satellites. (Reuters)

average monthly subscription fee of around USD 37. Initially the
service uses 4 transponders on the PAS-3 satellite (now owned by rival
Hughes/DirecTV). In the longer term, the PAS-6 satellite, scheduled
for launch by the end of 1006, will devote 12 transponders for the
Brazilian subscribers. (PRNewswire via Pointcast)
