Hi guys, this is just about the oldest saw around, isn't it? I just can't get
behind it, no matter how hard I try.  It's jsut too narrow.  It doesn't jive
with the literature "out there" -- so, what was Heinlein doing
when not at the
keyboard, anyway? Piloting spaceships? Was Uk LeGuine talking to dragons? (Or,
talking on the "ansible"?) Did Agatha Christy commit mayhem in
her spare time?
I don't think Jules Verne spent one minute in a cart under the sea or under the
earth, and I truly doubt Sophocles knew Medea or her relations. I also think
this kind of English-teacher-ish advice keeps good storytellers from telling
their tales, and keeps the bookshelves full of soapopera-type drek.   If you
wanna write fantasy, write it. If you want to write about life in a
stragne-exptic place as a person of the opposite gender and a different
orientation, go for it.  I DO not believe i need to become an ax murderer to
write *about* one. And, hey, I'm not even going to discuss the erotic writers
amongst us. Just my opin', mind. Lezlie
