There is no sudden requirement for a packet password. Apparantly for quite awhile DB has been using packet password even though not configured. SBBSecho when configured a certain way (using the old version that always "worked" with your two systems) would ignore those packet passwords. Now the latest version does not ignore them. So apparantly DB has been stuffing unconfigured packet passwords for quite some time without anyone noticing.
