normally, the way fidonet echo linking evolved and was designed to work,
you would simply send an areafix request to your feed for an area... if
they don't have the area, they forward the request up to their feed and so
on until the echo is either found and linked at the top distribution loop
or it is not found and a "not found" message is sent back down
the line... if the area is found and linked, it is passed back down the
line and each system adds it into their feed list and passes it down to the
system that sent the request for it and so on until it reaches your
system... those intermediate systems may carry the echo to you as a
passthru area or they may select to add it to their local message areas...

that's the way it is supposed to work but many don't understand these
things and ignorantly break the system because they don't know... others
break the system on purpose because they can... either way, it either works
or it is broken because of someone specifically breaking it...
