Concerning _Cloned Scanners_, Bill Cheek said to Troy H. Cheek in SCANRADIO:
BC> I'll attest to the fact that the PRO-2004/5/6 are all from the same
BC> mold and die. There ARE plenty of subtle differences in the
BC> electronic designs, and of course, the physical layouts can differ
BC> dramatically. But they are the same, more or less.
All sources seem to agree on that. What can be done to one can (usually) be
done to the others, etc.
BC> 6. Each of the PRO-2004/5/6 uses an entirely different CPU, though
BC> the pin functions in each are identical. I have sucessfully
BC> installed a PRO-2006 CPU in a PRO-2005; changed the Clock Resonator
BC> from 7.37 MHz to a 2006's 12 MHz, and it worked as a PRO-2006!
Well, you can't get much more closely related than that!
BC> What's more, the PRO-2035, PRO-2042, and the PRO-43 are all closely
BC> related to the PRO-2004/5/6 series, though there are substantive
BC> differences in physics and electrics here and there.
BC> Still.......they're much alike.
Good to hear. I've worked my way through most of Radio Shack's scanners,
either by buying/borrowing used scanners or taking advantage of the liberal
return/exchange policy on the new ones. I've settled on the Pro-43 as my
handheld of choice, but still haven't decided on a base/mobile unit.
I was leaning towards the Pro-2004/5/6 direction, but once I decided to keep
the 43 I had it modified to free up the disabled bands, so now having a base
scanner that picks up same isn't that high of a priority. The firmware of
the 2035 has really grown on me, and the 2042 reads as even better. Did mods
for the 2035 blossom as you predicted in your _Ultimate Scanner_ book? Will
the same mods work for the 2042?
