subject: Windows NT and Exchange Server

Hiya Jack,
On 17-02-98, whilst lying in the gutter of the information super highway, I
heard Jack Coleman whispering to All about Windows NT and Exchange Server,
 JC> 1. Do I just need
JC> Windows NT Workstation installed on each computer and continue to
JC> have peer-to-peer networking or do I have to purchase Windows NT
JC> Server as well, and have one one computer set up as the server (and
JC> the others running NT Workstation)?
Just set up one as the server for 3 people. It will obviously need to be
running at all times someone wants access to the common folders.
 JC> 2. Can I install Microsoft
JC> Exchange Server on a PC with Windows NT Workstation or do I need the
JC> NT Server for Exchange Server to work?
You probably need NT Server for that.
JC> I'm getting conflicting advice from the computer stores in town -
Nothing new there then.
JC> their knowledge of software is limited to the latest wizz-bang games
JC> . Our network will be expanding to six PCs this year and we need to
JC> share faxing and scanning facilities as well as internet access. Any
 JC> help is greatly appreciated.
At 5+ users I'd consider getting a dedicated server. Administration and
security become easier with a client server structure at that sort of level
if you're doing anything more than basic file sharing. By putting the fax
stuff on there and the Internet access, you'll also not be slowing down any
of the workstations.
